New to me Tokyo60s

Saw an ad for a black Tokyo60 on r/MechMarket.

Price was right (especially with the bundled Boba switches), so I picked it up: Black Tokyo60 with acrylic diffuser, case and plate foam from MKUltra (I removed the case foam, as it was blocking the underglow LED), Poron switch pads, lubed/bandaid and holee modded Durock V2 stabilizers, and Boba U4T switches. This is a different “season” (season 3) than the boards Drop is selling now; the corners of the acrylic diffuser, for instance, aren’t as flush as my other Tokyo60 boards.

Followed my own instructions for flashing it to be programmable with VIA.

I picked up a set of Drop + MiTo SA Laser keycaps that were on sale last week (and to that I added the Mac modifiers). I’m not wild about the keycaps, to be honest. They’re flatter than the MT3 profile, and what I ordered (or at least what was displayed) had “ASCII” alphanumerics, what I got were keys with the Japanese markings (the Gaijin set), which make the board a lot busier than I like, visually.

I returned them. In my defense, this is how the transaction went (still the case several days later as I recreate it); it certainly looks like you're getting the ASCII alphanumeric (non-Gaijin) set:

The site gives every indication you’re buying this set:

When in fact you’re buying this:

Even if you add it to the cart and click the cart contents to see what you’ve placed in the cart, and even if you re-select Cyberdeck 2 on the product page. You have to either manually scroll through the photos or select a different option (e.g., “Alphas”) and then go back to “Cyberdeck 2” to see what you’re actually ordering. Poor design, Drop.

They then launched a BOGO sale and I picked up the Drop + MiTo DCX profile Cyber keycaps, if I don’t like that I may pick up the Drop + Matt3o MT3 profile 3277 keycaps, which are now also on sale.

Then I found another one on eBay, a Season 4 Slate never assembled. That one I think is going to get the white-on-black DCX keycaps with Mac modifiers I picked up at the same time as the DCX Cyber keycaps (to get the “BOGO” pricing), if I like ’em. And then I’m done for a minute, unless I can build the Unix60 cheap. I have three primary workspaces at home, my office, and a travel board (the D60Lite, which came with a nice carrying case).

5/25 Update: I threw a set of black-on-white MT3 keycaps on the Season 3 while I wait for a couple of sets to arrive from Drop (White on Black MT3 and Matt3o 3277 MT3). Then, of course, as my luck goes, the keycap set I’ve wanted since it came out, but could never make work, just got re-released with more options, and now suddenly it’s a viable HHBK set: Drop + Matt3o /dev/tty MT3 R3 with Apple Kit. Sigh. Meanwhile, I kinda like the white-on-black, at least for the moment:

Tokyo60, black, with black-on-white MT3 keycaps
Tokyo60, black, with black-on-white MT3 keycaps
(I also ordered a set of OEM profile shine-through keycaps from Amazon for the D60Lite, because they were like $20 and the Keysterines aren’t really usable in low light, as I thought they’d be. I think I’ll be able to combine these with the modifiers etc. from the AliExpress set I got a few weeks ago and make a usable Frankenstein board.)

Finally, the Slate Tokyo60 from eBay came with a dead PCB :( but evidently the 1UP RGB 60% PCB HTE (and now pi60 HSE?) is a drop-in replacement, so with a partial refund from the seller, that’s what I’m picking up.
