GOAT (for now) Mobile MagSafe charging solution
For the Solterra, for my iPhone 16 Pro with the unreliable USB C port, I wanted something that would hold the phone visibly and securely and charge it with a decent amount of juice, and ideally with cooling. (I was waiting for TackForm to bring the CR07 back, but, alas, support confirmed it’s been discontinued.)
The components I currently have, which work together brilliantly:
- The vent hook module from this: Coolpow for MagSafe Car Mount【Windshield+Vent+Dash】Magnetic Phone Holder (the phone holder component works well, too, but doesn’t charge). It has a 17 mm ball so interoperates well with other hardware.
- This Anker 67W 3-Port USB-C Car Charger (the ESR below comes with its own 12V charger, but I know and trust the Anker, which is a little more flexible[1]; if I didn’t already have the Anker, the adapter that comes with the ESR is I’m sure fine...) [Edit: If I had it to do over again, I’d probably go with the 167.5W Anker charger instead; it’s $38 but USB-C1 is 100W (more than enough for a MacBook Pro, let alone the Air I’m usually toting), while USB-C2 pumps out 45W (way more than enough for the highest speed charging via the ESR), and USB-A still delivers 22.5W...]
- The ESR OmniLock Qi2.2 Certified 25W MagSafe Car Mount Charger with CryoBoost, which I got when it went on “Black Friday” sale for $52 (normally $58, as high as $70)

So far it seems to work really well. I was camped out charging at a Tesla Supercharger station on a road trip and had the Subaru in Room Mode. The phone was streaming audio through CarPlay while I watched the Rams trounce the Buccaneers, and providing a data hotspot for my laptop. Even with all of that going on, it charged the phone quickly (it was about 50% when I tossed it on the charger).
The vent clip that comes with the ESR just did not fit the Solterra, but the one from “Coolpow” did and fit perfectly. I left it connected to the ESR hanging off the vent for a two hour drive and it was rock solid. I’m stoked.
Edit: The vent mount is usually ... fine ... but I don’t really like having stuff hanging from it long term, and it does block the vent if you want to use it for, you know, heating or cooling the car. Sigh. This cupholder mount is kind of a kludge but works perfectly with the ESR charger (the 17mm ball on the ESR fits perfectly), and is my daily mount now: Universal Cup Holder Expander Adjustable Base with Phone Mount.
[1] I can draw 9W from both the other USB-C and the USB-A, or 22.5W from the USB-A port, while USB-C1 delivers a steady 45W; if only one of the USB-C ports is in use, and nothing else, it gets 67W, more than enough for laptop use, etc.
