The amp modeler is only the start ...
Okay, I probably should have known this before taking the plunge ... I’ve been using NUX stuff as an audio interface basically (USB connected to a computer, with a TRRS headset connected, and the whole package used as the audio source for Google Meet etc. for online lessons). At the office, I have the NUX patched into a Pignose, played at very low volume levels. At home, I really have only used the NUX with headphones; for light jamming / practice I’ve mostly been using a wireless Mighty Air. I have an amp at home, a 50W Marshall combo (G50R CD) I got from an apparent hoarder (that’s a whole story). I suppose I can (at least temporarily) use that via the effects return (see below). But what I really should have is an FRFR (full range flat response) speaker setup. At the price point I’d like to stay, that’s probably something like a Headrush FRFR108 ($200 or so used) or FRFR112 ($300+ used) (the latter especially if I’m going to use it for bass at all), the Positive Grid Spark CAB ($200+ used), some people swear by the Harbingers (e.g., V2410). Maybe the Harley Benton FRFR-112A ($260)¹
Above that, I see a lot of recommendations for things like the Fender Tone Master FR-12 ($750 list), a Line 6 Powercab Plus model (like $1100 list for the 112, but street prices are lower, and maybe $400 for used?), the Yamaha DBR line, the QSC K12.2 (or the slightly more budget-friendly CP12), the Laney LFR-112, the Atomic CLR NEO MKII, the Friedman ASC-12 (or ASC-10), etc. ... (all of which are starting to get into (or exceed!) the price point of the Fractal device itself!)
It’s all a lot. I might just get an inexpensive (relatively) Headrush until I absolutely know I need something more / different. With maybe this as as a guide: Guitar Player: Best FRFR speakers
| Page from FM3 manual showing amp hookup |
Then there are accessories (stuff for your stuff). A well reviewed third party gig bag is $95+ (or you can spend $40 on a Harbor Freight case like the Apache 3800, or $100 on an Apache 5800 roller case that will also hold pedal extensions, cables, etc), protective guards to cover the screens ($35); pedal extensions (either the Fractal FC-6 ($550 list) or something funky like these extra switch modules... Sigh.
¹ Technically the HB has a built-in DSP that makes it not a true FRFR speaker setup, but you can set the DSP to “OFF” and set the EQ to type “PA” and it’ll probably be “close enough,” especially at the lower price point...
