Slim laptop tote - the search continues
I’ve been using a tomtoc Protective Laptop Shoulder Bag ($41 when I bought it, $48 now but with a 10% coupon as I type this) to tote my MacBook Air M2 13.6", and it’s ... fine ... But a tight squeeze with a bare minimum of accessories:
- A multi-day (or multiple device) 148 Wh battery pack (Anker 347 Power Bank a/k/a PowerCore 40K) with 2x USB-A and 2x USB-C ports (max output 30W, perfect for an Air; can be had for around $50) (this thing is huge)
- Currently a 20W wall wart to recharge, e.g., the Anker 347 (Anker 511 Charger (Nano Pro), $12), but I should swap that for a 30W Anker 511 Charger (Nano 3) ($17) I have sitting around doing not much (the 347 will charge up to 30W over USB-C), that’s almost exactly the same size
- A pen
- Logitech M350 Pebble mouse ($22) (low profile)
- Small 5x6" mouse pad
- Anker USB C to Lightning Cable (1ft, $17) (to fast charge an iPhone or iPad)
- A short USB-A to MicroUSB-B cable (I’m not actually sure for what; recharging the keyboard on an iPad case maybe?)
- A Baseus PD 100W USB C Cable, 5A Type C to C Fast Charging Cable, 3.3ft LED Display ($15), which both charges (e.g.) a MacBook Air, but shows the charging wattage in real time (though I think I’m going to (also?) start schlepping an Apple MagSafe 3 cable, and using one at home, to save wear and tear on the USB-C ports, to free up a port, etc).
- A short USB-A to USB-C cable (I think it came with the Anker power pack?), for charging ... whatever
- A short USB-A to Lightning cable (for slower charging, e.g., an iPhone, or a pair of AirPods, or whatever)
- Vivarin (ofc)
It all fit, but there was no room for anything else.
On a lark, I picked up the tomtoc 360 Protective Laptop Shoulder Bag, which says it will fit the 14" MacBook Pro and the 13" MacBook Air (there’s also a 16" version) - and truth, the 13.6" Air is a little loose in its padded, corners-protected compartment (I’m used to my tomtoc stuff being reassuringly snug).
I got mine “Used - Like New” for like $37, and it was legit new, tags still attached.
It’s slightly bigger than the other tomtoc bag, and the outside compartment extends the full height of the bag unlike the other one, so everything fits much more easily. There’s also a slot for an iPad, but it doesn’t have any real protection, and with the bag loaded up with my accessories, my old Pro 9.7 in its ZAGG Rugged Book Pro protective case (which I love, but which is chonky), does not squeeze in. Without the battery pack, or with a thinner pack (like maybe the Anker 537 Power Bank / PowerCore 24K, which is only like 1/2 the capacity but should be enough for an all day trip, and is 3/4" thinner and a pound lighter), it might work.
