Apple IIgs Redux
I brought my ROM 3 IIgs back from St. Louis after the holidays. It was a bit more yellowed than I remembered (especially the space bar on the keyboard). Installed was a C.V. Tech 4MB RAM card (populated with 1MB) and a V-Tech UDC card, and an intact (phew!) battery.
I left those cards in St. Louis, and moved everything from my ROM1 machine to this ROM3. So far it's equipped with:
I left those cards in St. Louis, and moved everything from my ROM1 machine to this ROM3. So far it's equipped with:
- Third party keyboard I found on Amazon, NOS, for $50 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JE3UZS6)
- Uthernet II Ethernet card, coupled to an AdaFruit panel mount Ethernet port (part no. 909: https://www.adafruit.com/product/909). I have this screwed into the bottom hole of one of the taller rear panel openings, which works well enough.
- VidHD video card, coupled to an AyaGroup HDMI Extension Male to Female Panel Mount Cable (SKU 10HM-PM228V4-01). This is in the small, rounder, rear panel opening, and fits perfectly. This works extremely well; the only "oddity" is, hooked up to my versatile Dell 2007WFP monitor (1680x1050), the IIgs display is shifted to the right and down (but still 100% visible), since the output is intended for a 1920x1080 display. Still, the best video solution I've tried yet, that works with modern monitors (I've also used a SCART cable and SCART to HDMI adapter, and before that a GBS-8220).
- RAMGS/4 memory card, from GSLabs.
- CFFA3000 solid state storage card, with a 128MB CF card and a USB pig tail (that I'm going to replace with a panel mount version, AdaFruit part no. 908: https://www.adafruit.com/product/908).
The only other thing I could see myself adding to this box would be an accelerator, and maybe a Wombat ADB/USB bridge, to use a more modern keyboard / mouse combo. (I love the GS-era stuff, but also kind of want to preserve it, if that makes sense?)
I have the Uthernet talking to the network, and I'm able to telnet to my NAS box with an NDA Telnet client so far; next up will be using the NAS box (a Linux server) with the GS natively, using https://peterwong.net/blog/apple-iigs-network-netatalk/, probably with an assist from the work done with A2SERVER.
