Linux on UTM

Image
UTM can Virtualize or Emulate Following the instructions here , I got Ubuntu up and running (virtualized, not emulated, using ubuntu-22.04.3-live-server-arm64.iso) on an M2 MacBook Air. (To do: Setup an Intel version under emulation; could that be virtualized on Intel Macs? Different metadata but same disk images? Curious.) Setup with 2048MB, 2 CPU cores, OpenGL acceleration disabled, 32GB virtual disk. For a moment I got a message about the display not being active, but it powered through and rewarded my patience. Comparing the base model MacBook Air M2 13.6" to my NAS (an old HP Microserver with an Intel® Celeron® CPU G1610T @ 2.30GHz ) with sysbench :   Celeron M2 CPU speed (events per second) 620.71 9277.71 Number of events 6209 92791 Okay, yeah, even with the UTM overhead, that’s fast enough to be usable. What about Fedora for Intel? Setting up a new VM with Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-39-1.5.iso, with System: “Standard PC (Q35 + ICH9, 2009) (alias of pc-q35-7...

VirtualPC on Apple Silicon - Meh.

Image
Oracle has released a beta of VirtualPC running on Apple’s ARM (“Apple Silicon”) machines, like this MacBook Air 13.6". The most recent version is 7.0.8, for whatever reason they have not pushed 7.0.10 or later. About VirtualBox window screenshot Download it here (look for the " macOSArm64.dmg " file): https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/7.0.8/ I tried it out with both the “Intel and AMD x86_64” and “ARM® aarch64” spins of Fedora Workstation 39 (in both instances using the Live ISO image). Since I’m running a base model Air, I gave each machine 2GB RAM, 1 CPU, and a 15GB disk image - should be enough for a proof of concept. The Intel image was a bust, though it did initially start to boot. The logfile wasn’t much help: 00:00:59.847132 !! 00:00:59.847132 !! {vmsvga3dctx} 00:00:59.847132 !! 00:00:59.847154 !! 00:00:59.847154 !! {vmsvga3dsfc} 00:00:59.847154 !! 00:00:59.847155 !! 00:00:59.847155 !! {vmsvga3dsurf} 00:00:59.847155 !! 00:00:59.847155 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Reinstalling Monterey on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14"

Image
Install Monterey.app icon The space bar on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14" was binding, so Apple replaced it. But then the fingerprint reader didn't work. So Apple fixed that. Eventually, I got my computer back, but with a 0-cycle battery (yay!) and wiped storage with a fresh install of Venturfa (booo!). I'm not a fan of Ventura and want to use Monterey for as long as I can (I also have three 2015-era machines that max out at Monterey, officially). So... (All of this was done on a 2015 11" MacBook Air i7, running Monterey, using a double-ended Lexar USB A/C flash drive . The instructions came from Apple , actually. I don’t know why I thought Apple Silicon would be harder to “downgrade” than an Intel Mac; maybe because installing updates on Apple TV devices, iPads, and iPhones, etc., is usually a one-way street?) Over to Mr. Macintosh for an installer file for 12.6.8 . % curl -O https://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/50/44/042-15015-A_XSTTRTW8H4/cu5mniyv6jsu0h806qoqt5qtlu...
